vignon, the city of the Popes, has over five thousand years of history. With its strategic location on the Rhône River, Avignon has long been a crossroads of cultures and trade in Europe, and it was one of the most important centers of the Roman Empire. The Avignon Bridge, theme of France’s best-known nursery rhyme (sur le Pont d’Avignon, on y danse, on y danse), was the first bridge built over the Rhône, and to this day it is an imposing reminder of the city’s past glory.
